Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple move from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that come with most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
