The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
