Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team might be designing a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
